Time Hippopotamus (タイムヒポポタマス), a.k.a Time Mus (タイマス Taimasu), was an unreleased science fiction anime project that is mentioned in the movie. The anime was produced by TRAP and Musashino Animation: TRAP offers the setting and Musani draws the whole anime.
Time Mus incident[]
According to Aoi Miyamori, Time Hippopotamus was in good shape during producing. However, when producing Episode 8 of the anime, TRAP took all of the settings back, that made Musani cannot continue to make anime in any reasonable situations. Thus, Masato Marukawa, who was the boss of Musani, resigned from the company in order to take responsibility for this incident.
Although Shun Watanabe became the boss of Musashino Animation later and the fact that Marukawa didn't make the company closed, they cannot save Musani from the vicious circle: Most companies had bad impressions against Musani, made Musani received fewer and fewer cases. More and more staffs were quit or fired from Musashino Animation. And because the bubble of the anime industry burst, things got worse and worse.
By the time the movie starts, Musani has only a few core staffs with only some little hope. The whole situations around Time Hippopotamus is later called Time Mus incident (タイマス事変 Taimasu Jihen) by anyone who is related to Musani.
During producing Air amphibious assault ship SIVA, the whole staffs have seen SIVA as a spiritual successor of Time Hippopotamus.
